My ratings of all the Big Chain coffee blends I've tried so far. I worked at Starbucks for 3 yrs and after escaping that hellhole and its shit coffee I've been keeping a list of how it fares against other big brands. Obviously your local small batch coffee shop is going to have the best coffee, but his rating is for brands that you can buy nationally. The criteria is that the brand must be available in stores in more than one state, and buyable both in single personal cup & bulk options. Also, I'm judging the brand by their basic 'regular' or 'medium blend' coffee.
Starbucks Pikes Place Blend
Rating: 4/10
Miserable experience. If you want the insider scoop, basically Starbucks coffee sucks becuase they are constantly trying to outpace Dunkin in coffee sales, and as a result they are always increasing the caffeine content of their beans every year (so that the coffee is more addictive). This is at the expense of everything else. There is SOME flavor but it's buried underneath the initial burnt taste. Not the abolsute worst, but there are so many better options.
Royal Farms Medium Blend
Rating: 6/10
Middle-of-the-road coffee. Very basic, but gets the job done. While the acidity and balance is alright, it could really use some more flavor. I wish Rofo would redesign their product packaging on these cups though because wow are those cup designs gaudy.
Sprouts Organic Market - Organic Blend
Rating: 8/10
A good hearty coffee with noticable flavor! Slightly fruity flavor and a good level of acidity. A little more on the expensive side but not by much. A good "sip while reading a book in an armchair" kind of coffee.
Dunkin Medium Blend
Rating: 1/10
DIRT! I don't know how anyone can finish a cup of this sludge. Worst coffee on this list. I ordered an 8oz cup and I couldn't even finish that. I don't know how anyone drinks this regularly unless their tastebuds have fizzled out of existance. The only perk you get with buying this coffee is how dumb cheap it is compared to every other option but goddamn.
Wawa 100% Columbian Medium Roast
Rating: 9/10
Honestly one of the best big brand coffees you can get imo. VERY low acidity, which I consider a good thing. Robust and earthy flavor. Also has the plus of being sold at the same place you can get good hoagies from so it's a win/win.
Costco's Kirkland Signiture House Blend
Rating: 7/10
Another pretty good middle-of-the-road coffee. However, Costco outsources their bean roasting operations to Starbucks and it shows. There's some of that signiture Starbucks Burnt Dirt Taste in here, but it's not horrible.
7/11's Medium Blend
Rating: 5/10
The most mid coffee you can possibly get. Not much to say about this one. I will say that the day I bought this, the 7/11 employee had airpods in and did not even say a word to me during the entire transaction, and after I said thanks he stared at me with his arms crossed like I just insulted his entire family. A true American 7/11 experience.
Buc-ee's Medium Blend
Rating: 6/10
Another middle of the road but still acceptable coffee. For those of you who don't know, Buc-ee's is a gas station/convenience store chain that has most of its locations in the deep south & the southwest, and although they brand themselves as a gas station, their stores are the biggest fucking gas stations you will ever see. They are a livesaver on long road trips across the south and this coffee honestly is pretty good for being "gas station coffee".
